Mechanical Engineering: Info and writing guide for the curious student

Job Searching 101: Where to Start

If you want to know the best way to get a job and/or internship, albeit for mechanical engineering or otherwise, you need to know where to look for a job. Mechanical engineering jobs are always in demand, making finding one not hard at all. You can search these jobs, to find out what pay is like, and what some companies require as previous experience. This is a helpful hub, to direct you to some sites or places that can help you to quickly find a job in your professional field of choice.

Indeed.com - The reason I would recommend this site first, is it pulls from thousands of other sites across the nation, and compiles the information for you. This makes searches much faster, if you are causally job surfing, or even looking for something serious.

Department of Workforce Services - Every state has one; this link goes specifically to the Utah DWS. While Indeed.com will pull info from this site, the info may not always be up to date. This will keep you more current on the needs of the community. Be prepared to set up an account though.

University Employment Specialists - If you are a mechanical engineer, you will have a host of companies that keep in contact with the school on a regular basis, when they are looking for new talent. I have my reserves about this approach, because companies who hire continuously from the same place may not offer as competitive of wages, because they expect a certain level of quality of employee, coming out of the university. I say these things, from previous experiences with employment services from schools.

Private Employment Agencies - These are the most under-utilized resource of all the ways to find a job. Most people do not realize that employment agencies do not cost anything to the employee searching for a job. Many companies will turn to these agencies, when the are looking for specific candidates, with specific experience.  If you want your name out there, it would definitely be a good idea to keep one or two of these agencies in mind.
